Oct. 9 2006, N. Korea Conducts it's 5th Nuclear Test


This report tracks un-usual extreme and historic weather events all over the world during a 6 week period ending Nov. 17. 


BUFFALO, N.Y. (Oct. 13) --Season's First Snow Hits Midwest, Northeast A rare early October snowstorm left parts of the Great Lakes and Midwest blanketed with 2 feet of snow Friday morning, prompting widespread blackouts, closing schools and halting traffic. The snow downed scores of tree limbs and toppled power lines, leaving more than 220,000 customers without electricity in western New York.


BUFFALO, New York, (Oct. 14) AP -- A flood watch was posted Saturday as the region's record snowfall melted, and nearly 350,000 homes and businesses still had no electricity.   More than a day after nearly two feet of snow buried western New York.

 

October 14- Much of the nation from the Great Plains to the Northeast was jolted by an early wintry outbreak whose effects ranged upward to a freakish 22.6-inch dump of snow at Buffalo, N.Y.


Hungary, Slovakia, and southern Poland - Strong thunderstorms drenched much of these countries causing rivers to overflow. Houses and roads were submerged, bridges washed away, and power supplies were cut.


Oct. 15  HONOLULU  -  Magnitude 6.7 and 6.0 earthquakes shook the islands Oct. 15, causing power outages, bridge collapses and road closures. Those quakes caused an estimated $200 million in damage. Governor Issues Disaster Declaration: aftershocks kept the state on edge.  including one measuring a magnitude of 5.8, Experts said aftershocks could continue for weeks.

Flooding in Texas kills 4.

 

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- Heavy thunderstorms brought torrential rains, flooding and tornadoes to southeast Texas Monday, killing four people,  As much as 10 inches of rain fell in the Houston-Galveston area overnight.  
 

Ten tornadoes and widespread flooding have been reported Monday across southeastern Texas and Louisiana.. Three deaths are being blamed on the severe weather outbreak, The storms are causing rainfall rates of more than 1 inch per hour in areas that had excessive rainfall on Monday. The area of heavy rains extends into the Tennessee Valley and east into the western Carolinas.


Kenya:  A tropical wave brought heavy rain to Kenya.  The normal rainfall for the entire month of October is a little over 3 inches.   4.37 inches of rain fell in 24 hours.

Oct 17- Tropical downpours continued across Kenya for a second consecutive day. Bringing the two-day total to 7.20 inches. More than double the normal amount of rain for the entire month in Mombassa.  

 
Tropical Downpours affected southern Mexico for yet another day. 10.08 inches of rain fell.  Acapulco has totaled about 7 inches of rain since Friday, which is more than the October average rainfall.


Saskylakh, located in far northern Sibera started the day Tuesday with a morning low of 25 degrees below zero (F). The normal low for mid-October is closer to zero.


Brazil received 5.20 inches in just 24 hours, about two-thirds of the normal rainfall for the entire month of October.


Oct. 17- Two days after tornadoes and heavy rain pounded southeast Texas and southern Louisiana.  The heavy rain is being blamed for at least four deaths and major flooding, especially in the greater Houston area. Tornadoes and strong winds destroyed or damaged buildings and residences, uprooted trees and downed power lines across southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana.   
October 18, 2006  Torrential Rains Pound Southwest Turkey  As of Wednesday evening, rainfall was 9.5 inches at Antalya, and 7.8 inches at Finike.  Normal monthly rainfall is on the order of 2 inches.  


October 19th  Heavy rain pelted far southern India late Wednesday to Thursday morning. Rainfall was 5.67 inches within just 15 hours.


New Zealand  -Thursday, strong winds belted parts  southeastern North Island, sustained winds reached 70 mph at Castlepoint.

 
​​10-20 Florida's Record-Breaking Heat To Persist Through The Weekend..., On both Thursday and Friday, the high temperature in Orlando, Fl., set a new daily record. The city will continue to challenge records each day this weekend as thermometers rise to the 90-degree mark. 


10-20 Damaging Winds Pound New England.... Since Friday afternoon, howling winds with gusts between 40 and 55 mph have been pounding New England. With tree roots easily losing their grip in the saturated soil, many people across the region are waking up to darkness as numerous trees and power lines have come down, resulting in power outages   
10-20 Parts of eastern Mexico were drenched by thundery cloudbursts Thursday night to Friday morning. In northern Veracruz, rainfall was 6.24 inches within six hours at Tuxpan; actually, most of this tally came within just three hours.
In northwestern Sakha (Yakutiya) Republic, a morning low of -26 degrees F was registered for a second straight day Friday in the town of Saskylakh. These marks were about 30 degrees below average for this part of October
Asia -  Malay Peninsula Rainfall was 6.94 inches within 42 hours
Saudi Arabian Heat – Highs of 102, 102, 108, 106 and 104 degrees were registered Sunday through Thursday, and the temperature soared to at least 106 Friday. The average daily high during October is 96 degrees.
Northern Leeward Islands - rainfall was 7.59 inches Thursday morning to Friday morning.


10-22 MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- Hurricane Paul strengthened to a Category 2 storm off Mexico's western coast on Monday and was threatening southern Baja California, Paul had maximum sustained winds of 100 mph


10-23 Lisbon, Portugal - More than 5 inches of rain soaked the capital, from last Monday through this Monday. This amount of rain is unusual, as the average rainfall for all of October is about 2.4 inches.


Kangnung, South Korea, rainfall was 12.18 inches within 36 hours During the same period, Sokcho was doused by 9.98 inches of rain.  Changjon, North Korea, which was whipped by gales at the height of the storm, was soaked by 10.85 inches of rain.


South Pacific Ocean has a new tropical cyclone, Tropical Cyclone Xavier wielded sustained winds as high as 100 mph.  one of the nation's northern islands, Vanua Lava, rainfall was already 6.14 inches within 60 hours


Hurricane Paul is a dangerous Category 2 storm now with top sustained winds of 110 mph.


10-25 100-degree heat was registered again in parts of northern Argentina. La Rioja soared almost 20 degrees above average to reach 105 degrees. A high of 101 degrees was set in Catamarca. 


Thundery downpours unloaded 2.36 inches of rain upon Tel Aviv, Israel. This amount is more than three times the average rainfall for all of  October, which is about 0.7 of an inch. Additionally, the thunderstorms unleashed wind gusts to 50 mph.


10-26 Scotland Whipped by Hurricane-Strength Winds  A powerful storm whipped parts of the United Kingdom with strong winds and downpours Thursday. Tiny North Rona Island was battered by sustained winds over 80 mph, or those of a minimal hurricane. Gales were measured southward to northern and eastern England.  

 

Australia's Davis and Mawson bases, some 400 miles apart, were both thrashed by sustained winds above 80 mph. Each location was blinded by wind-whipped snow that cut the visibility to zero.


A tropical wave soaked eastern parts of the northern Philippines On Luzon Island, rainfall was 6.65. At Catarman, which is on Samar Island, 6.27 inches of rain fell.


Downpours drenched southern India:  Chennai (Madras) 5.63 inches of rain within 24 hours more than half of the average rainfall for all of October.


Algeria's Mediterranean coast. At Alger,  the high of 97 degrees was fully 20 degrees above average


10-26 The biggest October snowstorm to hit Colorado in several years dumped up to 20 inches Thursday, grounding flights, closing highways, knocking out electricity.   Idaho Springs, about 20 miles west of Denver, reported nearly 21 inches   Interstate 70, the state's main east-west route, was closed for 150 miles from Denver to Burlington.


10-28 NEW YORK (AP) -- More than 100,000 utility customers had no electricity Sunday from Maryland to Maine as a storm system blasted the region with winds gusting to more than 50 mph,  The weather observatory atop New Hampshire's 6,288-foot Mount Washington, reported sustained wind of 100 mph and a gust to 114 mph. The peak also got 11 inches of snow overnight, for an October total of 39 inches.


11-01 Typhoon Cimaron Strengthens Cimaron wielded the highest sustained winds of 120 mph around an eye that was 255 miles southeast of Hong Kong, China.  


11-01 Machilipatnam. India  The city was flooded by 32.56 inches of rain from Sunday morning to late Wednesday. Adding downpours from late last week lifts the total rainfall to 37.56 inches beginning last Friday morning. For perspective of the magnitude of these cloudbursts, consider that October's average rainfall is 10.2 inches and November's is 4.4 inches. This midweek was much colder than usual in portions of far northern Europe as well.


In Kautokeino, Norway, Wednesday's morning low was -22 degrees F, or about 40 degrees below average In Turkey, rainfall was 7.52 inches within 54 hours as of Wednesday afternoon On Greece's Skyros Island, the storm unloaded at least 8.98 inches of rain.


Northwestern sections of eastern Russia's vast Sakha (Yakutiya) Republic were unusually cold Wednesday. A morning low of -39 degrees F was followed by an afternoon high of -34F. These marks were 30-35 degrees below average for the date.


11-05 Pacific Northwest, some spots have received upwards of eight inches of rain in the past three days, and the worst of the storm is yet to come.  High winds are again expected with the next surge of moisture coming inland tonight and Monday.  Some areas are forecast to receive as much as ten more inches of rain.


11-07 Record River Crests in Washington State  The rains over the last few days have been nothing less than astonishing in the Northwest. This is especially true in western Washington where some mind boggling totals since last Thursday have reached over 30 inches.


SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- Record rainfall brought heavy flooding to parts of the Northwest on Tuesday, Causing evacuations and damaging roads and houses.  Rainfall records were set Monday across Western Washington, including 8.22 inches at Stampede Pass, which broke an all-time rain record of 7.29 inches set on November 19, 1962.   Gov. Chris Gregoire declared an emergency for 18 counties, authorizing the National Guard Helicopters and hovercraft were pressed into service for rescues.  
 

A heavy, wet snowstorm buried Ayan in eastern Russia's district of Khabarovsk Monday to Tuesday. At least 14 inches of snow fell on this town on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk as the temperature hovered right at the freezing mark,


11-09 India's Bay of Bengal coast:  Vishahkapatnam, rainfall was 4.92 inches within 24 hours, whereas the average rainfall for all of November is 4.0 inches.


Summery heat burned much of northeastern Mexico's state of Coahuila Wednesday. In Monclova, the temperature soared to 96 degrees F. 


Across the Rio Grande from Eagle Pass, Texas, a high of 95 degrees F was registered at Piedras Negras, Mexico. For perspective, the average daily high in these two locations during this part of November is in the upper 70s F.


Severe Thunderstorms Precede Arctic Air  The same arctic air mass that brought temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees below zero to parts of Montana earlier this week is spreading to the south and east.    Canada's Yukon Territory:  Low of -35F -----  12.47 Inches of Rain in British Columbia

 

11-09 Over 40 locales across the Desert Southwest and Plains set new record high temperatures Wednesday.   For Example, the high in Denver, Colo., reached 80, the first time the Mile High City has ever experienced an 80-degree day in the month of November.


Severe cold gripped parts of Russia's vast region of Siberia.  The town of Yerbogachen, registered consecutive lows of -45 and -41 degrees F Wednesday and Thursday; these marks were about 30 degrees below average for this part of November.


New Jersey gets 4 inches of rain:  A storm dumped more than 4 inches of rain on parts of New Jersey.  Rain fell at a rate of 1 inch per hour at times.    Flooding streets and causing lengthy flight delays.


11-10- Storm shuts Rainier park for the first time in 26 years:  Nearly 18 inches of rain in 36 hours swamped roads and bridges and cut power and sewer lines.  Initial cleanup will take weeks.  


11-11  Typhoon "Chebi" intensified into a super-typhoon on early Saturday, threatening the Northern and Central Luzon regions in the Philippines.  Chebi wielded maximum sustained winds of 145 mph around its eye, making it a Category 4 storm.


11-13 Northwest socked in by snow just days after floods:  "Once it gets to a point where it's too dangerous for our own maintenance crews to clear the roadway, we go ahead and close it," said Mike Westbay, a Washington Transportation Department spokesman.  Along the Oregon coast, gusts topping 100 mph helped knock out power to at least 65,000 customers late Sunday, and dumped more than a foot of snow on the Cascades Authorities closed two mountain passes east of Mount Rainier until spring because of the threat of avalanches, the earliest such closure for one of the passes in 12 years.


Kenya:  Massive flooding in the northern and coastal regions have killed at least 21 people and have displaced as many as 60,000 more. The floods have been caused by three weeks of unusually heavy seasonal rain. Officials warn further devastation is expected from the continuing downpours.


Unusually cold for middle November in Canada's western prairies from northern Saskatchewan to northern Manitoba.   Key Lake, Saskatchewan:  the temperature plummeted to -26 degrees F, or fully 30 degrees F below average for the date.


11-14  Severe, icy gales ripped many portions of Iceland Tuesday. At Dalatangi, for example, northeasterly winds exceeded 85 mph during the morning as the temperature hovered near the freezing point.


11-15 Stampede Pass, Wash., over 3 feet of snow has fallen in the past three days alone. The bad news is that the Pacific storm track still has its sights on this part of the country.  In the Cascade Mountains, snow is being measured by the foot and not by the inch.


Hurricane Sergio continues to loom off the coast of southwestern Mexico. Sergio wielded top sustained winds of 100 mph. 


11-16 Northwest storm knocks out power to thousands:. This time, the storms packed less rain but stronger winds, leaving roughly 150,000 homes and businesses without electricity.   The latest rains raised the total for the month to 11.63 inches, breaking the old record of 11.62 inches set in November 1998.


MONTGOMERY, Alabama (AP) -- Lines of powerful thunderstorms pelted the South with heavy wind, rain and hail Wednesday, turning a skating rink into a hulk of twisted metal soon after the 31 preschoolers and four adults inside had fled to the only part of the building that turned out to be safe. Several states were battered by the storms, which unleashed tornadoes and straight-line winds that overturned mobile homes and tractor-trailers, uprooted trees and knocked down power lines.


11-17 Seattle:   SeaTac airport did indeed break the all time November rainfall record yesterday with a total now of 11.63 inches.
 

11-19 Heavy rains have affected parts of Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya, resulting in severe flooding. The flooding waters have disrupted everyday life as nearly 2 million people have been affected in some way from the rising waters. 

 

Russia: Muzhi, the temperature plummeted to -40 degrees F early Tuesday; this mark was about 40 degrees below the average low for the date.


Samoan island of Upolu:  At Apia, the capital, rainfall was 9.98 inches within 36 These cloudbursts nearly equaled the average rainfall for all of November, which is 10.2 Inches.


Dominican Republic: rainfall was 4.81 inches within 24 hours This amount exceeds November's average rainfall by about 1.3 inches.
