January -1-1996 New Years Volcano- A column of ash and smoke rose almost four miles and a column of steam and boiling water shot more than a mile into the air as a new volcano erupted on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. The eruption was followed by several powerful earthquakes.
Jan. 2 PALU, Indonesia (Reuter) - At least eight people were killed by a Tidal Wave triggered by a powerful New Year's Day earthquake that hit Indonesia's Sulawesi island, police said Tuesday.
Jan 5 (Reuter) - Tropical Cyclone Barry is making landfall over the southwest Cape York Peninsula of Australia with top winds up to 85-90 mph, Weather Services Corp said.
Philadelphia has broken their all time snowfall record for a single storm with 29.9 inches
Newark, NJ also broke their single-storm record, with 27.6 inches of new snow. In Lynchburg, Virginia 20 inches of snow fell establishing a new 24 hour snowfall record. The previous record was 17.4 which occurred in January 1922. In Blacksburg, an astonishing 33.9 inches of snow fell, with a 24 hour total of 27.7 inches both setting new records.

Jan 7 (Reuter) WASHINGTON, - The largest snowstorm in DECADES swept the eastern United States on Sunday, closing airports and paralyzing the nation's capital. Flood warnings were posted along the Atlantic coast as the storm raced northeastward to New York -- where a State of Emergency was declared.
The National Weather Service predicted up to 30 inches of snow for the area around the capital, and said Zero Visibility had virtually closed traffic by air along the nation's East Coast corridor. Blizzard warnings were issued from Western Virginia through New York, including parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland, "It's going to be a huge storm. This could go down in the history of snow storms as far as snowfall amounts. In New York City, an army of 1,650 plows were being readied to clear snow, which the National Weather Service predicted would BEAT the Dec. 26-27, 1947, record when 26.4 inches, fell on the city. National Guard trucks were sent to Cape May and Atlantic counties where a flood warning was

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 7 (Reuter) - Heavy rain left four people dead in southeastern Brazil on Sunday, the latest casualties of persistent bad weather that has killed at least 20 people in the past few days. 7,000 in the state were left homeless, as a result of heavy rains which began on Wednesday. Flooding also brought Rio de Janeiro to a halt on Thursday.
JAN.8 MOSCOW (Reuter) - An earthquake shook Russia's Far East Sakhalin Island Monday. The agency quoted seismologists as saying it measured 6.1 on the Richter scale .
Jan. 10, ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar (Reuter) - Tropical cyclone Bonita, packing 120 miles per hour winds, bore down on Madagascar Wednesday and residents reinforced homes and moved away from rivers, state-run radio said. Weather Services Corp. said Wednesday winds were at about 155 mph near the system center, and should still be about that when it hit the east-central or southeast coast of Madagascar in 24 hours.
BOSTON (Jan. 10) - Temperatures dropped well below zero Saturday across the Northeast, making it the coldest day in a decade for some cities and keeping all but the hardiest people indoors. St. Johnsbury, Vt., led the list of records Saturday with a low of 27 below zero, the National Weather Service said. Unofficially, Saranac Lake, N.Y., reported 34 below.
Jan.19 FARGO, N.D. (Reuter) - A blinding snowstorm driven by frigid hurricane-force winds shuttered schools and businesses across the Plains Thursday, stranding drivers on closed highways as temperatures took a dizzying drop.
In Fargo, Residents woke Friday to some of the Coldest Temperatures Ever Recorded.
The National Weather Service said actual temperatures were between
25 to 40 degress below zero.
But 20 mile-per-hour winds made it feel like 50- to 75-below, forecasters said. Highways, schools, businesses and local government offices were closed across the Dakotas, Minnesota and Nebraska, where abandoned cars embedded in snowdrifts littered roadways. The violent weather was spawned by a powerful Arctic frontal system pushing out warm, moist air and driving down temperatures along the front by more than 40 degrees in a matter of hours. Chicago reported a record-high temperature for the date of 63 degrees -- with the mercury plunging into the single digits Thursday night.The January thaw was quickly melting snow from last week's blizzards along the East Coast, and forecasters warned an inch of rain threatened dangerous flooding. In Washington, where many residents still have not retrieved their cars, from lingering snow banks and slushy snow. still packs roadways.
WASHINGTON (Jan. 21) - President Clinton declared Pennsylvania a disaster area Sunday from floods that drove thousands of people from homes. There were reports that as many as 8,000 people were forced to leave their homes in Pennsylvania before the Susquehanna and other flooded rivers crested during the night. Maryland and Virginia were working on requests for Clinton to declare them flood disaster areas as well. Rains and melting snow flooded the mid-Atlantic just over a week after record snowstorms covered the area. Flooding in Washington, D.C., appeared to be the worst in a decade!
Weary home and business owners in historic Old Town Alexandria sandbagged properties in a bid to hold back the flooding Potomac. But there were reports of flooded basements as the River, engorged with recent record snow falls, rose up to eight feet beyond normal flood levels. In Pennsylvania the Susquehanna River swamped the state capital of Harrisburg, knocking out a bridge and swamping the governor's mansion.
